Centenary of Endurance’s Demise

Lansing_EnduranceThis year marks the 100th anniversary of Shackleton’s fateful Antarctic expedition in which his ship Endurance became trapped in ice. Our book club read Alfred Lansing’s account of that expedition, Endurance: Shackleton’s Incredible Voyage, in 2013, and most of us were thoroughly amazed and captivated by this tale of survival in extreme conditions.

This historic event continues to inspire us in a variety of ways, from considering how the lessons from Shackleton’s adventure can be applied to entrepreneurship to giving us tourism ideas: Silversea Expeditions is offering cruises retracing Shackleton’s voyage. Having read Endurance, I personally have no inclination to retrace those steps no matter how high-tech the journey will be.

Shackleton is even a muse of the theater, with a production of Ernest Shackleton Loves Me currently playing in Boston. The video below is a news piece about the New Brunswick production earlier this year.
