Ebook is the electronic version of a paperback book. Unlike the paperback book, you cannot touch it because it is only available digitally. With the introduction of ebooks, lesser people are buying printed books.

The main advantage is that you don’t have to carry it. It is very inconvenient to carry all your books when traveling around. If you want to bring several books, it will be exhausting. People who choose to read ebooks instead of printed books will save themselves from these hassles. Ebooks don’t take up many spaces. You can store all the ebooks in your computer. If you regularly read ebooks, it is recommended that you get an ebook reader device.

The fonts of the ebook can be adjusted according to your needs. If you have difficulty reading small fonts, you can set the font to a larger size. You can easily search for the information in the book by using the search feature. To use the search feature, you should enter the keyword of the information which you are searching for. Once you have submitted the query, you will see a list of results of sentences that contain the matched keywords.

Since it is an electronic book, you don’t have to visit the local store to purchase it. Instead, you are to visit the online ebook stores to purchase them. The costs of ebooks are usually cheaper because no printing cost is involved. Customers can expect the ebooks to cost half the price of usual books. Because there is no need to travel to the bookstore, you will save a lot of money on buying petrol. Besides, you also don’t have to pay for the shipping fee. You don’t need to pay the shipping fee because the ebook is delivered digitally. The process of buying an ebook online is simple. After purchasing the ebook, you will be given a link to the download page. Once it is downloaded to your desktop, you can read it offline.

Ebooks are environmentally friendly because they are not made from paper. Every year, millions of trees are cut down to produce the paper. Due to the large number of trees being cut down each year, the temperature of the countries in different parts of the world is rising. You can prevent more trees from cutting down by choosing to buy ebooks.

Nowadays, interactive features such as audio podcast and video are included in the ebook. Audio podcast and video will help the readers to understand the content clearly. You won’t experience any interruption when watching the video because the ebook is already downloaded to your computer.

If you want to read a printed version of the ebook, you can print it with your printer. You can print the whole ebook with your personal printer without incurring a lot of costs.

Ebook reader is a device which you can use to read electronic books. Ebooks are better than printed books in many ways. Firstly, they don’t have weight. Printed books are often heavy especially if it has many pages. If you are to bring the thick printed books on your trip, it will be exhausting. It is extremely convenient to read books with the ebook reader. You can bring the ebook reader instead of carrying several books in the bag. The ebook reader device only weights a few grams. It is so light that you can carry in your hand for as long as you want and not feeling tired at all. The ebook reader device is portable so you can carry it to wherever you want easily. It is small in size and can be kept inside a pocket or bag. You also don’t have to worry about losing a page from the ebook because it is in digital format.

One disadvantage of printed books is that it takes up physical spaces while electronic books only occupy the space in your computer. With an ebook reader, you can store all the ebooks in one place. When you want to read a book, you simply visit the app to pick your favorite book. After you have chosen a book, the content will be displayed in the ebook reader app. It is very convenient to buy ebook as you don’t need to drive to the book store. After you have purchased and downloaded the ebooks, you can transfer them to the ebook reader.

Ebook reader allows you to save hundreds of dollars on book expenses. Ebooks are significantly cheaper. You can get ebooks at half the price of the printed books. Many websites are offering ebooks for free so you can read it on your ebook reader without paying for it. When using the ebook reader, you can use your hand to flip over the pages of the digital book just as if you are flipping the pages of a paperback book. You can use the device to read ebook at all kinds of locations including bus, car and etc. The ebook reader usually supports interactive features such as video, podcast and etc. If your ebook includes a video, you will be able to watch it in your ebook reader.

Apart from that, using an ebook reader device is much more environmentally friendly. When the demand for ebooks becomes larger, schools will slowly replace the traditional books with them. The replacement of traditional printed books with ebooks will reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. By purchasing an ebook reader, you are supporting the environment and making a contribution to prevent global warming.

At a press event in New York Tuesday, Barnes & Noble announced that it has captured more than 25% of the ebook market, a 5% increase from the year previous.

The company also announced that the Nook is the bestselling Android tablet in the U.S. and that more than 1 million applications have been downloaded through the Nook platform. In addition, the retailer has established relationships with 8 million digital libraries and more than 50,000 publishers.

Perhaps more impressively, Barnes & Noble has sold more than 1.5 million subscriptions to newspapers and magazines since the feature became available six months ago.

But numbers were just the leadup to the real announcement: a new, smaller, touchscreen ereader called the Simple Touch Reader, which boasts two months of battery life.

The ebook market is growing faster as it grows larger.

The International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF) on Friday reported U.S. wholesale ebook sales for January, 2010 were $31.9 million, up 261 percent from the same month a year earlier.

To put this in perspective, I created the chart above. The chart compiles annual ebook sales data from the Association of American Publishers. For 2010, I took the latest IDPF January data and annualized it.

The data is collected from only 12-15 U.S. trade publishers. This means it dramatically understates what’s really happening in ebooks, because thousands of large and small publishers, as well as tens of thousands of independent authors, aren’t reporting their data. The data also doesn’t capture ebooks sold outside traditional retail channels.

The above omissions in no way invalidate the data, because as an indicator of direction and momentum, the AAP/IDPF data provides the best publicly available trending information I’m aware of.

What you see from my chart is that ebook sales grew nicely between 2002 and 2007, but were really too small to register on the radar screens of most industry watchers. Starting in 2008, however, the growth rate started to accelerate, and then this acceleration continued throughout 2009 and into the first month of 2010.

According to the AAP, in 2009 ebooks accounted for 3.31% of all trade book sales, up from only 1.19% in 2008. Even if sales stay flat from January onward in 2010, we’re looking at ebooks accounting for 6-8% of U.S. book sales in 2010. If sales accelerate further, a 10% monthly run rate is certainly likely by the end of this year. These numbers are dramatically higher than most reasonably-minded industry watchers predicted even a few months ago.

The rosy numbers above still dramatically underestimate the impact ebooks are having on the bottom line of authors, publishers and retailers. In January, during Amazon’s quarterly earnings conference call, Jeff Bezos announced that for books it sells in both Kindle and print formats, ebooks were then accounting for 60% of unit sales.

What’s driving the torrid growth of the U.S. ebook market?

Amazon deserves most of the credit. In January, Rory Maher of TBI Research reported that his publishing industry contacts were telling him that Amazon was accounting for 90% of all ebook sales. Other analysts have since confirmed those estimates.

The upcoming April 3 launch of Apple’s iPad, along with more aggressive moves by Google, Barnes & Noble, Sony and scores of other new ebook device makers and indie retailers, will no doubt try to chip away at Amazon’s purported 90% share.

The real story is not how or if these competitors take share from Amazon. It doesn’t matter. What matters is that an ever-growing pro-ebook crowd of powerful consumer-facing companies are pulling out all the stops to help spread the joy of ebooks to every corner of this book-hungry globe.

Why are consumers going ga ga over ebooks? Back in October, I blogged some of the reasons in my Huffington Post piece, Why Ebooks are Hot and Getting Hotter. I listed several reasons, such as the proliferation of exciting new e-reading devices; screen reading rivaling paper; content selection; free ebooks as the gateway drug; lower prices; and great selection.

If we boil it all down to what really matters, it’s about customer experience. People who try ebooks are loving ebooks.

Lest we think ebook reading is all about pricey jet set devices like the iPad, Kindle, Sony Reader and B&N nook, it’s worth considering some telling data that came out of the latest Book Industry Study Group survey. As I reported in my Tools of Change conference wrap-up, BISG found that 47% of all ebook reading is happening not on these new-fangled devices, but on ordinary computer screens.
